TrAVEl (Travel Assistant for the Visually-Impaired and Elderly) is a collaboration between Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Management University as part of the overarching project undertaken by Ngee Ann Polytechnic to develop a public transport solution for the visually handicapped and elderly members of the society, is an iOS application that assist the visually handicapped in using the public transport in Singapore. It aims to be a complementary solution that will
1. recommend a planned trip based on destination given,
2. guide the visually handicapped to the bus stop or MRT station,
3. track the journey on the bus and notify the user when his/her stop is near.
TrAVEl is developed to leverage the iOS accessibility function, specifically the voice over functionality, which is critical for the interaction with the smart phone by the visually handicapped. Due to the niche audience, application developed for these vulnerable members of the society has been lacking. Thus, we aim to bridge the gap between the empowerment and convenience the smart phone revolution brings to the people and these vulnerable members of society.
Disclaimer: TrAVEl requires the use of GPS functionality even when running in the background. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life."
